This week, we have been celebrating National Apprenticeship Week and the theme, #SkillsForLife, is an excellent representation of what apprenticeships are all about, providing invaluable on-the-job experience.
We caught up with #TeamTridents’ newest apprentice, Tristan Dodwell-Cooke, to hear about his experience and how he believes his apprenticeship is helping him develop the #SkillsForLife to become a Chartered Building Surveyor.
Combining Theory and Practice
“The top skills I have learned so far are heightened observational skills” says Tristan, who is based in our Liverpool office. “during building inspections I have learnt it’s key to be able to spot even minor defects that would usually go unnoticed”
This on-the-job learning is complemented by his university studies. “Through university, I have also obtained a knowledge of laws and regulatory frameworks surrounding the construction industry, this is essential as it relates to every part of the job!”
Soft Skills
Apprenticeships offer more than just technical training; they also cultivate crucial soft skills essential for professional success.
“For me” Tristan explains, “the main soft skills I have learnt so far are time management and being in control of my own time. This has taught me to effectively plan and block time for tasks, making sure my calendar is up to date to help keep on top of my workload.
Another valuable soft skill I’ve developed is communication. This is essential, as my project work involves collaboration, requiring regular updates on my progress. I have also had to quickly improve my excel skills as it makes calculations easier to carry out and is more time efficient”
The apprenticeship advantage
“I do believe this apprenticeship will give me an advantage” Tristan notes “Most of the skills I have gained so far are from doing the job day in day out. This hands-on experience and insights I’ve gained from working on projects alongside the team isn’t something that can be taught in a classroom”
